Spikeball is a Chicago-based sporting goods brand that turned roundnet into a global phenomenon. Despite strong brand recognition and a passionate community, their direct-to-consumer channel was underperforming — too reliant on retail partnerships, battling severe seasonality, and lacking the strategic ecommerce management to unlock their real revenue potential. Spikeball brought in the Misfits during the holiday rush, so we hit the ground sprinting.
The L.E.N.S. Insight
We ran a L.E.N.S. analysis on the recreational sports category to uncover people's tensions and motivations with pick-up sports. We found that people were no longer drawn to rec sports because they have become too organized, too competitive, and too difficult to plan ahead when everyone has a busy schedule. They wanted casual bonding, physical activity, and an excuse to get together with friends.
Spikeball is a recreational game that fits in your trunk, can be played anywhere, and only needs four people to play. We applied our insights from L.E.N.S. to their ads, their online store, and reconnected it to their brand ethos of "Find Your Circle". We leaned into community positioning and tapping into the emotional drivers their audience already had.
